Explain the concept of "least privilege" in container security.
← All DevSecOps & Cloud Security questions
Re-explain
Least privilege means granting containers only the minimum permissions and resources needed to function. This includes:
- User Privileges: Running containers as non-root users when possible
- Capability Dropping: Removing unnecessary Linux capabilities
- Resource Limits: Setting CPU, memory, and storage constraints
- Network Access: Limiting network connectivity to required services only
- File System Access: Using read-only file systems and minimal volume mounts
Example:
# Instead of running as root
USER 1000:1000
# Drop all capabilities and add only required ones
RUN setcap cap_net_bind_service=+ep /app/server
